NTT Scientists Contribute Fifteen Research Papers to NeurIPS 2025
NTT Research, Inc. and NTT R&D, divisions of NTT (TYO:9432), and NTT DATA, Inc. announced that NTT scientists and researchers have contributed to fifteen presentations at this year’s Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), a leading machine-learning (ML) and computational neuroscience conference. The eight papers associated with NTT Research mostly address foundational issues. The six papers generated by scientists in various NTT Inc. laboratories focus on system-level and applied-science themes. The paper from NTT DATA highlights the importance of trustworthy AI, directly relevant to enterprise adoption.

NTT Research Funds New Program with Harvard Center for Brain Science
NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced that the NTT Research Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, has made a gift to establish the Harvard University Center for Brain Science (CBS)-NTT Fellowship Program in the new field of Physics of Intelligence. The two-year gift, renewable for up to three more years, creates a fund that supports post-doctoral research in the physics of intelligence, an emerging field that uses physics to tackle fundamental questions in intelligence, bridging computer science, neuroscience and psychology. If renewed, the donation could total over $1.7 million. Harvard retains full control over the administration of the fund, which can be used to support two post-doctoral researchers, technology, facilities, travel, guest speakers for seminars and meetings, and other associated costs.

NTT Research and NTT SO Lab Present 12 Papers at the Theory of Cryptography Conference 2024

1QBit, NTT DATA and NTT Research Win BMW Quantum Computing Challenge
BMW has announced the four winners of the BMW Quantum Computing Challenge. The team with 1QBit, NTT DATA and NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), together with the University of Notre Dame, won in the category "Configuration Optimization of Pre-Production Vehicles." The competition called on researchers and companies to develop innovative quantum algorithms and test their solutions on real quantum computers. According to BMW, quantum computing has immense potential in the automotive sector, for example in complex optimization problems, in materials research and in quantum machine learning for automated driving.

IACR Recognizes CIS Lab Director Brent Waters with Test-of-Time Award
NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced that the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) has honored a paper written by Cryptography & Information Security (CIS) Lab Director Brent Waters with a Test-of-Time Award. The paper, delivered at Crypto 2009, presented a new way of proving adaptive security for Identity-based Encryption (IBE), which was later expanded to cover more complex cryptographic systems. This is Waters’ third Test-of-Time Award from the IACR, and sixth total. It was presented on August 20, at Crypto 2024, one of the three flagship conferences of the IACR. Dr. Waters and six other cryptographers affiliated with the CIS Lab are also presenting 12 papers at this year’s event. Scientists from NTT Social Informatics Laboratories (SIL), a division of NTT R&D, are responsible for another eight papers at this top-tier conference. Crypto 2024 will be held August 18-22, in Santa Barbara, Calif.

NTT Research Names Iris Shelly MEI Lab Scientist
NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced that it has named Iris Shelly as a Scientist in its Medical & Health Informatics (MEI) Lab. Shelly, an applied research engineer with expertise in biomedical signal processing and low-power devices, joined NTT Research in June 2021. She was most recently a Senior Applied Research Engineer at BIOTRONIK/Micro Systems Engineering, Inc. where she designed, developed and validated cardiac arrhythmia detection algorithms. Shelly brings this experience to the MEI Lab where she will initially work on model architecture and the interface for the bio digital twin initiative. Following Shelly’s initial research priorities, she will work on several other aspects of the bio digital twin initiative, including disease-related aspects of the model.

NTT Research Boosts Scientific Teams with Nine New Hires
NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced that it has named Timothée Leleu as Senior Research Scientist and a Group Head in the Physics & Informatics (PHI) Lab. It has also named Victor Bastidas and Maya Okawa as Research Scientists in the PHI Lab; Abhishek Jain, Senior Scientist in the Cryptography & Information Security (CIS) Lab; and Manae Abe as marketing coordinator. Joining NTT Research as post-doctoral fellows are Kyungduk Kim, Midya Parto and Ryotatsu Yanagimoto in the PHI Lab; and Naresh Boddu Goud and Xiao Liang in the CIS Lab. An expert in neuromorphic computing, Dr. Leleu strengthens the PHI Lab’s proficiency in artificial neural networking and sharpens its focus on Coherent Ising Machines (CIMs). The additional hires and appointments will boost the PHI and CIS Labs’ respective research capabilities. NTT Research CIS Lab Director Wins Second IACR Test-of-Time Award for Paper on Oblivious Transfer
NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced that a paper co-authored by Distinguished Scientist and Director of the Cryptography and Information Security (CIS) Lab Brent Waters has won an International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) Test-of-Time (ToT) Award. Waters and co-authors Chris Peikert and Vinod Vaikuntanathan delivered their paper, “A Framework for Efficient and Composable Oblivious Transfer,” at the Crypto 2008 conference. The IACR gives Test-of-Time Awards annually to papers that were delivered 15 years prior at each of the three IACR general conferences (Eurocrypt, Crypto and Asiacrypt). A five-member IACR committee selects the winners based on a consensus view of a paper’s impact on the field. In addition, CIS Lab scientists co-authored 14 papers accepted for Crypto 2023. A cryptography researcher with the NTT Social Informatics Laboratories (SIL) co-authored another paper for this year’s conference, being held August 19-24 in Santa Barbara.

NTT Research Hackathon Unlocks Groundbreaking Applications that Balance Privacy and Security
NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced that a team from NTT Global in Belgium took first place in its hackathon on attribute-based encryption (ABE). Held September 16-29 at the NTT Research offices in Sunnyvale, Calif., the hackathon drew five NTT-affiliated teams from around the world. The winning demonstration, built by Senior Software Engineer Pascal Mathis and Data Scientist Jean-Philippe Cabay, both of NTT in Belgium, was titled “Confidentiality in Images.” The team delivered a presentation video on this groundbreaking application for ABE at the NTT R&D Forum, a virtual business conference that took place Nov. 16-18. Honorable mentions at the invitation-only event went to demos created by NTT DATA teams from Italy and Romania. A panel from NTT DATA, NTT Research and the NTT Service Innovation Laboratory served as the hackathon’s judges. The competing teams were tasked with building an implementation of ABE, a type of public-key encryption that allows for sharing data based on policies and attributes of the users.

NTT Research and NTT R&D Deliver Award-winning Research at Asiacrypt 2022
NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced that scientists from its Cryptography & Information Security (CIS) Lab and NTT R&D’s Social Informatics Laboratories (SIL) co-authored ten papers being delivered at Asiacrypt 2022, one of the leading international conferences on cryptologic research. Two of these papers won the conference’s Best Paper Awards: one paper on quantum equivalence co-authored by CIS Lab Senior Scientist Mark Zhandry, and another on elliptic curves co-authored by NTT SIL Distinguished Researcher Mehdi Tibouchi. Other members of the CIS Lab and SIL contributed three and four papers, respectively. One additional paper had both CIS Lab and SIL co-authors. Organized by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR), this year’s hybrid event will take place in Taipei, December 5-9.
