What Happened?

Shares of metal packaging products manufacturer Crown Holdings (NYSE:CCK) fell 5.8% in the pre-market session after the company issued fourth-quarter profit guidance that trailed Wall Street forecasts, overshadowing stronger-than-expected third-quarter results.

In a company press release, Crown projected fourth-quarter adjusted diluted earnings per share between $1.63 and $1.73, falling short of the Wall Street consensus estimate of $1.79. Third-quarter adjusted diluted earnings per share rose to $2.39 from $2.24 in the prior-year period, while GAAP diluted earnings reached $2.08 compared to $1.85 a year earlier. Net sales expanded to $3.71 billion from $3.20 billion, lifted by a 6% increase in global beverage can volumes and the pass-through of $405 million in higher material costs, the release detailed. Chairman and

Chief Executive Officer Timothy J. Donahue stated in the release that shipment growth in Asia, North America, and Europe helped absorb rising input costs, although total segment income dipped to $484 million from $490 million under cost inflation. Crown projected full-year adjusted diluted earnings per share between $8.35 and $8.45 alongside adjusted free cash flow of at least $950 million, per the release. Management supported liquidity with $81 million in quarterly share buybacks and net leverage of 2.5 times adjusted EBITDA.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $110.48, down 3.8% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Crown Holdings’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 2 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 12 months ago when the stock gained 3.6% on the news that the company reported better-than-expected third-quarter financial results and raised its full-year earnings guidance.

The packaging company announced adjusted earnings of $2.24 per share on revenue of $3.20 billion, surpassing analyst expectations for both metrics. Following the strong quarter, Crown Holdings raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to a midpoint of $7.75 per share, signaling confidence in its business outlook. Overall, it was a solid quarter for the company, with both top and bottom-line beats alongside an optimistic outlook.

Crown Holdings is up 6% since the beginning of the year, but at $110.48 per share, it is still trading 9.5% below its 52-week high of $122.14 from August 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Crown Holdings’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,048.
