Puerto Rican bank Popular Inc. (Nasdaq: BPOP) sold its U.S. mortgages and servicing assets to affiliates of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) for $700 million to take a $450 million loss.  Shares of Popular climbed 92 cents to close at $8.15 while Goldman Sachs stock gained $2.14 to close at $163.97.

Petsmart Beats

Petsmart Inc. (Nasdaq: PETM) reported second quarter results that slipped to 30 cents per share from 35 cents per share a year earlier but the results surpassed expectations and the company reaffirmed its outlook for the year.  The stock price leaped $2.58 to close at $27.00.

Rumors that Medicare may lower payments for implanting some of Cyberonics Inc.'s (Nasdaq: CYBX) epilepsy devices sent shares of the implantable medical device maker plummeting $4.65 to close at $20.45.
GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) will pay Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (NYSE: VRX) $125 million as part of an agreement to jointly develop the epilepsy drug retigabine as well as other epilepsy treatments.  Shares of GlaxoSmithKline rose 50 cent to close at $47.09 while Valeant stock tumbled $1.28 to close at $18.82.

Revenue Rises For Zale

Although Zale Corp. (NYSE: ZLC) swung to a fourth quarter loss of 15 cents per share compared with earnings of 3 cents per share a year earlier, revenue rose to surpass estimates.  The specialty retailer of fine jewelry forecast fiscal 2009 results above expectations sending the stock price soaring $4.77 to close at $27.92.


 

MBIA Receives $741 Million

Bond insurer MBIA Inc. (NYSE: MBI) will receive $741 million in premiums as part of an agreement to take over $184 billion in municipal bonds that are now guaranteed by privately held Financial Guaranty Insurance Corporation.  The stock price leaped $4.17 to close at $16.15.

Upscale jeweler Tiffany & Company (NYSE: TIF) surprised investors with profits that doubled to 63 cents per share from 29 cents per share in the year ago period and lifted its forecast sending the stock price soaring $4.24 to close at $43.85.

 

Clothing retailer Talbots Inc. (NYSE: TLB) posted a second quarter loss that nearly doubled to 47 cents per share from 25 cents per share last year as revenue fell while restructuring charges soared.  Company management pointed out that it was on track to cut costs and to close underperforming stores.  The stock price surged $2.82 to close at $12.82.

Solarfun Warns Of Price Drop

After twenty more patient deaths in a late stage clinical trial of its prostate cancer treatement GVAX, biotechnology company Cell Genesys (Nasdaq: CEGE) halted the study sending the stock price plummeting $2.01 to close at 79 cents.

Novartis AG (NYSE: NVS) decided not to file for regulatory approval of the nail fungus treatment the Swiss pharmaceutical developed with NexMed (Nasdaq: NEXM) after disappointing late stage trial results.  Shares of Novartis rose 54 cents to close at $55.25 while NexMed stock skidded $1.11 to close at 25 cents.

 

Shares of Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: AMLN) plummeted $6.76 to close at $20.48 after the drug developer reported four deaths related to its diabetes drug treatment, a joint venture of Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY).  Eli Lilly stock eased 15 cents to close at $46.87.


 

Ricoh Co. of Japan offered $1.6 billion to acquire Pennsylvania-based IKON Office Solutions Inc. (NYSE: IKN), which sells and leases copiers, printers and other office machines.  The stock price climbed $1.46 to close at $17.02.


 

Corinthian Colleges Falls Short

Chico's Beats Estimates

Second quarter earnings tumbled for Chico's FAS Inc. (NYSE: CHS) to 4 cents per share from 22 cents per share a year earlier due to the soft economy but the results topped analyst expectations.  Shares of the women's clothing retailer rose 11 cents to close at $5.09.

Luxury handbag company Coach Inc. (NYSE: COH) announced plans to repurchase $1 billion in common shares prompting Goldman Sachs analyst Adrienne Shapira to lift her earnings estimates for 2009 through 2011.  The stock price climbed $1.78 to close at $28.18.

Darden Restaurants Inc. (NYSE: DRI) blamed the economy for lower same-store sales at its Red Lobster, Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse locations.  The stock price plummeted $4.01 to close at $28.25.


 

Close-out retailer Big Lots Inc. (NYSE: BIG) posted better than expected second quarter results of 32 cents per share compared with 22 cents per share in the year ago period and raised its outlook for the year.  However, the company warned that same store sales for the third and fourth quarters will rise less than during the first half of the year sending the stock price tumbling $2.34 to close at $30.72.

Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac Rally

Shares of Fannie Mae (NYSE: FNM) climbed 43 cents to close at $5.62 and Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE) soared 68 cents to close at $3.97 rallying for a second consecutive day on hopes that the mortgage companies can ride out the troubled housing market by tapping debt rather than a government bailout.

Financial Institutions Drop

Continued concerns about the health of financial institutions weighed down shares of Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) $1.25 to close at $28.96, Washington Mutual Inc. (NYSE: WM) 23 cents to close at $3.60, and Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) 53 cents to close at $17.61.

An appeals court ruled in favor of Star Scientific (Nasdaq: STSI) in the company's patent infringement lawsuit against RJ Reynolds Tobacco.  Shares of the tobacco curing technology company leaped $1.09 to close at $2.76.

Piper Jaffray analyst Mark Murphy downgraded Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) after the company forecast third quarter revenue below estimates.  Shares of the customer relationship management services company plummeted $12.05 to close at $53.25.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Stephen D. Walker issued an investor note saying that production will increase for Kinross Gold Corp. (NYSE: KGC) in 2009 lifting the stock price $1.48 to close at $17.22.

Synopsys' Forecast Disappoints

(NYSE: WCG) agreed to pay $35 million to the U.S. Attorney in Florida in what is being perceived by investors as the first step towards settling claims that the HMO overcharged for services due to accounting errors.  Shares of the managed care services provider leaped $4.13 to close at $42.37.


Shares of UnionBanCal Corp. (NYSE: UB) surged $7.69 to close at $73.18 after Japanese bank Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. (NYSE: MTU) raised its bid to buy the rest of the California bank for $3.5 billion.  Mitsubishi UFJ stock edged up 15 cents to close at $7.48.
The Food and Drug Administration reported two more deaths of patients taking Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc.s' (Nasdaq: AMLN) and Eli Lilly & Co.'s (NYSE: LLY) diabetes drug Byetta.  Four additional patients developed pancreatitis.  Shares of Amylin plunged $4.45 to close at $29.76 while Eli Lilly stock slipped 73 cents to close at $48.05.

Wachovia And Merrill Lynch May Fail

David Kotok of Cumberland Advisors said on CNBC that Wachovia Corp. (NYSE: WB) and Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MER) are in danger of failing.  Shares of Wachovia slipped 61 cents to close at $14.96 while Merrill Lynch stock fell $1.55 to close at $24.74.

Perfect World Falls Short

Qwest Upgraded

Although Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) reported a slip in second quarter earnings ot 11 cents per share from 13 cents per share last year, the results beat estimates prompting an upgrade.  Shares of the telecommunications company rose 38 cents to close at $3.81.

Earnings Plunge For Live Nation

Concert promoter Live Nation Inc. (NYSE: LYV) reported lower second quarter earnings of 2 cents per share compared with 15 cents per share a year earlier but revenue rose to surpass expectations.  The stock price surged $3.53 to close at $16.15.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. announced a $2.4 billion buy-out of its publicly traded retirement savings company Nationwide Financial Services Inc. (NYSE: NFS) sending the stock price soaring $4.60 to close at $51.05.

VeriSign Widens Losses

Internet infrastructure services provider VeriSign (Nasdaq: VRSN) blamed a $98 million restructuring charge for widening second quarter losses.  An analyst downgraded the company sending the stock price plummeting $4.31 to close at $29.57.

AIG Reports Loss

Shares of American International Group Inc. (NYSE: AIG) plunged $5.25 to close at $23.84 after the world's largest insurer posted its third straight quarterly loss and took another round of mortgage write-downs.

Abercrombie & Fitch Sales Drop

Teen apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE: ANF) reported a 7% drop in same-store sales for July dragged down by weak foot traffic at its Hollister Co. store and Ruehl stores.  The stock price plunged $5.93 to close at $49.80.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) reported a 3% gain in same-store sales for July, but the results were lower than analysts' expectations.  The world's largest retailer also forecast a modest 1-2% increase for August sending the stock price tumbling $3.80 to close at $56.96.

 

J. C. Penney Raises Outlook

 J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) raised its second quarter earnings outlook as the retailer projected better demand for sale merchandise and a positive impact from its cost-cutting efforts.  The stock price climbed $1.93 to close at $33.53.

 

Sprint To Sell Stock

Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) announced plans to sell $3 billion in perpetual convertible preferred stock sending the stock price tumbling $1.21 to close at $7.34.

Whole Foods Disappoints

An analyst downgraded Whole Foods Market Inc. (Nasdaq: WFMI) after the company reported lower third quarter earnings of 24 cents per share compared with 35 cents per share in the year ago period, cut its guidance and suspended its dividend.  Shares of the upscale grocer tumbled $2.88 to close at $20.04.

Citi Investment Research analyst John Hill added Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE: FCX) to his list of top picks sending the stock price soaring $8.67 to close at $87.67.

BP Invests $90 Million In Verenium

BP plc (NYSE: BP) will invest $90 million in Verenium Corp. (Nasdaq: VRNM) to jointly develop next generation biofuels.  Analysts upgraded Verenium sending the stock price soaring $1.30 to close at $3.32.  Shares of BP gained $1.36 to close at $61.59.

Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE) posted a second quarter loss of $1.63 per share compared with earnings of 96 cents per share last year.  The loss was three times greater than expected by analysts as the mortgage lender warned that its losses may continue to mount due to falling home prices.  Freddie Mac stock plummeted $1.55 to close at $6.49 while shares of Fannie Mae (NYSE: FNM) also plunged $2.00 to close at $11.60.


Fidelity National Information Services Inc. (NYSE: FIS) reported higher revenues and lower earnings of 37 cents per share compared with 75 cents per share a year earlier due to one-time charges related to its spin-off of Lender Processing Services Inc. (NYSE: LPS).  Shares of Fidelity National leaped $3.53 to close at $22.50 while Lender  Processing stock rose 87 cents to close at $33.03.

MGM Beats Estimates

Second quarter earnings plunged for MGM Mirage (Nasdaq: MGM) to 40 cents per share from $1.22 per share in the year ago period due to lower room rates and less spending by visitors but revenue beat expectations.  The casino operator also announced that it has secured more than half the financing to build its $9.1 billion CityCenter project sending the stock price soaring $4.85 to close at $35.85.

Denbury Resources Falls Short

Although second quarter earnings for Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE: DNR) nearly doubled to 45 cents per share from 25 cents per share last year as oil prices surged, the results fell short of expectations.  The stock price dropped $2.60 to close at $23.17.
Health Management Associates Inc. (NYSE: HMA) disappointed with second quarter results that fell short of estimates sending the stock price plunging $1.00 to close at $5.51.

Global Industries Swings To Loss

Global Industries Ltd. (Nasdaq: GLBL) swung to a second quarter loss of 12 cents per diluted share compared with earnings of 35 cents per share in the year ago period and announced a plan to repurchase $100 million worth of common stock.  Shares of the offshore construction services firm plummeted $3.05 to close at $8.37.

3Com Lifts Outlook

3Com Corp. (Nasdaq: COMS) cited better than expected sales in China for lifting its outlook for the current quarter.  The stock price rose 20 cents to close at $2.06.

 

Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (NYSE: LEH) may be considering the sale of its entire investment banking unit, according a CNBC report.  Shares of the investment bank climbed $2.30 to close at $20.24.

 

Ambac Reduces Exposure

Ambac Financial Group Inc. (NYSE: ABK) stock continued to climb by rising 40 cents to close at $4.19 after the bond insurer on Friday announced an $850 million deal to to end its exposure to $1.4 billion in collateralized debt obligations.  The company will report second quarter earnings on Wednesday.
Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) recruited Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) COO Sanjay Jha to lead its handset division and to share chief executive duties with Greg Brown.  Shares of Motorola rose$1.01 to close at $9.82 while Qualcomm stock dropped $2.60 to close at $52.87.
Shares of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTX) continued to fall by plunging $2.75 to close at $29.95 after rival Schering-Plough Corp. (NYSE: SGP) reported promising results for its hepatitus drug candidate.  Last week, Vertex had also lowered its forecast for the rest of the year.  Schering-Plough stock added 62 cents to close at $21.03.

Shares of Wachovia Corp. (NYSE: WB) tumbled $1.87 to close at $17.11 after an analyst discredited the stock's recent rally due to short covering and pointed out that the bank still faced sizable mortgage losses.

PeopleSupport Inc. (Nasdaq: PSPT) received a $250 million offer from India-based outsourcing company Aegis BPO sending the stock price soaring $2.42 to close at $11.95.

Humana Raises Outlook

Health insurer Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) posted a slight decrease in second quarter profits to $1.24 per share from $1.28 per share a year earlier, but raised its outlook for the year.  The stock price climbed $2.17 to close at $46.81.

Paetec Holding Corp. (Nasdaq: PAET) warned that second quarter sales will fall short of estimates and full year results will also disappoint.  Shares of the integrated communications services company plummeted $2.72 to close at $3.17.

Sun Reports Loss

Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: JAVA) blamed the weak economy as well as restructuring charges for sharply lower fourth quarter earnings of 11 cents per share compared with 36 cents per share last year and forecast disappointing first quarter results.  The stock price plunged $1.31 to close at $9.32.

TomoTherapy Disappoints

TomoTherapy Inc. (Nasdaq: TOMO) disappointed with a second quarter loss of 14 cents per share compared with a loss of $3.15 per share a year earlier amidst challenging economic conditions and lowered its full year outlook.  Analyst downgraded the radiation therapy device maker sending the stock price plummeting $4.75 to close at $5.00.

Boyd Gaming Tops Estimates

Boyd Gaming Corp. (NYSE: BYD) reported lower second quarter earnings due to the weak economy but the results topped expectations and the casino operator increased its stock repurchase plan by $100 million.  The stock price surged $2.03 to close at $12.01.

Ambac Financial Group Inc. (NYSE: ABK) will pay $850 million to settle its exposure to $1.4 billion in collateralized debt obligations.  Shares of the bond insurer leaped $1.27 to close at $3.79.

Shares of Biogen Idec Inc. (Nasdaq: BIIB) plummeted $19.75 to close at $50.01 and Elan Corp. (NYSE: ELN) skidded $10.12 to close at $9.93 due to additional safety concerns about their multiple sclerosis therapy.
