Credit Suisse initiated coverage of homebuilders Centex (NYSE: CTX) and DR Horton (NYSE: DHI) with Outperform ratings saying that the sector should improve by spring of 2009.  Shares of Centex gained $1.05 to close at $15.15 while DR Horton stock rose 86 cents to close at $12.62.

CenturyTel Raises Dividend

CenturyTel Inc. (NYSE: CTL) announced that its quarterly dividend will increase by tenfold sending shares of the telecommunications company soaring $5.53 to close at $36.78.

Speculation that record crude oil prices will trigger interest in nuclear energy lifted shares of Uranium Resources (Nasdaq: URRE) 61 cents to close at $3.91.

Shares of Royale Energy Inc. (Nasdaq: ROYL) surged $1.91 to close at a new record high of $13.15 as investors focused on promising drilling prospects and a company disclosure that it had returned to profitability.

 

Photography company Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK) received a $581 million tax refund and announced a buyback of up to $1 billion in its stock.  The stock price climbed $1.69 to close at $14.03.

Halliburton Co. (NYSE: HAL) will no longer attempt to acquire British oilfield contractor Expro International Group.  The stock price climbed $2.98 to close at $53.01.

CapitalSource Inc. (NYSE: CSE) reported that it sold $1.5 billion in mortgage backed securities at a loss of $36 million sending the stock price tumbling $1.96 to close at $11.19.


National Oilwell Upgraded

RBC Capital Markets analyst Kurt Hallead upgraded National Oilwell Varco Inc. (NYSE: NOV) and lifted his price target for the oilfield services company saying that revenue is expected to rise.  The stock price soared $7.06 to close at $91.55.

Barrier Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: BTRX) will be acquired for approximately $148 million in cash by privately held Stiefel Laboratories sending the stock price surging $2.27 to close at $4.03.

BCE's Buyout Approved

BCE Inc. (NYSE: BCE) known as Bell Canada received high court approval to proceed with the largest leveraged buyout in history, a $35 billion purchase by a pension fund.  The stock price soared $1.94 to close at $36.04.

 

Agriculture giant Bunge Ltd. (NYSE: BG) announced a deal to buy Corn Products International Inc. (NYSE: CPO) in a stock deal worth about $4.4 billion.  Shares of Bunge plunged $11.47 to close at $110.70 while Corn Products stock leaped $7.85 to close at $50.75.

Sohu.com Inc. (Nasdaq: SOHU) warned that advertising revenue growth will slow after the Beijing Olympics sending shares of the Chinese media firm plunging $11.39 to close at $71.91.

Medis Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: MDTL) plans to raise $29 million through the offering of common stock as well as five year warrants to purchase common stock.  The stock price plummeted $1.32 to close at $3.68.

MF Global Prices Offering

MF Global Ltd. (NYSE: MF) announced the pricing of $300 million in convertible senior notes and convertible preference shares.  The stock price plunged $1.69 to close at $6.86.

Shares of Huntington Bancshares (Nasdaq: HBAN) surged $1.53 to close at $6.67 even though the bank warned that its provision for credit losses will most likely be higher in the second quarter than in the first quarter.


Money transfer services firm Western Union Co. (NYSE: WU) announced a $1 billion stock purchase sending the stock price soaring $1.94 to close at $25.10.

 

Fifth Third Bancorp Upgraded

Fifth Third Bancorp (Nasdaq: FITB) bucked the selloff among banks following an analyst upgrade.  The stock price gained 36 cents to close at $10.11.

In response to record fuel expenses, UAL Corp. (Nasdaq: UAUA) and Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) announced an initiative for global cooperation.  Shares of United Airlines parent UAL leaped $1.56 to close at $8.11 while Continental stock climbed $2.15 to close at $15.59.

Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Wienkes cut his price target for XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: XMSR) and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (Nasdaq: SIRI) saying that MP3 players and other technologies threaten both companies.  Shares of XM Satellite tumbled $1.77 to close at $8.61 while Sirius stock dropped 30 cents to close at $2.13.

 

Shares of chemical maker Huntsman Corp. (NYSE: HUN) plunged $8.00 to close at $12.86 as investors worried that Hexion Specialty Chemicals would withdraw its offer.

 

Coventry Lowers Outlook

Coventry Health Care Inc. (NYSE: CVH) lowered its outlook for the year due to higher costs.  Analysts promptly downgraded the managed care provider sending the stock price plummeting $8.70 to close at $31.30.

 

Solar panel producer Evergreen Solar Inc. (Nasdaq: ESLR) announced two deals worth a total of $600 million through 2012.  The stock price surged $2.06 to close at $12.30.

In a deal valued at approximately $1.6 billion, investment firm The Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) will take Apria Healthcare Group (NYSE: AHG) private.  Shares of Apria leaped $4.18 to close at $20.00 while Blackstone stock edged up 38 cents to close at $18.40.

Shares of SunTrust Banks Inc. (NYSE: STI) continued to fall by dropping another $3.66 to close at $36.95 after Goldman Sachs lowered its price target as well as its earnings outlook for the company.

Carmax Suspends Guidance

Carmax (NYSE: KMX) reported sharply lower first quarter earnings of 13 cents per share compared with 30 cents per share last year prompting the used car retailer to suspend its full year earnings and sales guidance.  The stock price tumbled $2.00 to close at $16.34.

MF Global Warns Of Shortfall

MF Global Ltd. (NYSE: MF) warned that first quarter earnings will fall short of estimates and announced that the company must raise another $300 million to repay debt.  The stock price skidded $5.43 to close at $7.83.

 

Lindsay Falls Short

Lindsay Corp. (NYSE: LNN) posted higher third quarter revenues and profits of $1.15 per share compared with 62 cents per share a year earlier, but the results were well short of Wall Street expectations.  Shares of the irrigation products maker plunged $20.73 to close at $103.70.

Fifth Third Bancorp (Nasdaq: FITB) slashed its divided and announced plans to raise at least $2 billion in capital to shore up its balance sheet.  The stock price plummeted $3.47 to close at $9.26.

 

Railroad Sector Upgraded

Analysts upgraded the railroad sector to lift shares of Union Pacific Corp. (NYSE: UNP) $3.35 to close at $75.82.

Goldman Sachs cut its price target for Washinton Mutual (NYSE: WM) and SunTrust Banks (NYSE: STI) saying that the nation's banks will probably have to raise $65 billion due to the continuing credit crisis.  Shares of Washington Mutual lost 53 cents to close at $6.22 while SunTrust stock tumbled $3.94 to close at $40.61.

Goldman Sachs cut its 2008 as well as its 2009 full year earnings outlook for Zions Bancorp (Nasdaq: ZION) and slashed its price target for the company sending the stock price plunging $3.79 to close at $33.37.


 

 

Infinera Lowers Guidance

Networking equipment maker Infinera Corp. (Nasdaq: INFN) lowered its 2008 revenue growth guidance saying that demand in North America is expected to weaken.  The stock price plummeted $3.53 to close at $10.28.

 

Canadian Solar Raises Guidance

Canadian Solar Inc. (Nasdaq: CSIQ) raised its revenue guidance for 2008 due to better than expected sales to German clients sending shares of the solar products company soaring $4.54 to close at $47.00.

 

Mentor Graphics Corp. (Nasdaq: MENT) rejected a buyout offer valued at approximately $1.45 billion from rival Cadence Design Systems (Nasdaq: CDNS).  Shares of Mentor Graphics leaped $2.65 to close at $14.98 while Cadence Design stock lost 75 cents to close at $10.84.

Wyeth (NYSE: WYE) and Elan Corp. (NYSE: ELN) reported mixed results for its mid-stage drug tests to treat Alzheimer's disease and planned to proceed with late-stage studies.  Shares of Wyeth climbed $2.08 to close at $45.16 while Elan stock surged $2.89 to close at $30.00.


 

Textron Lowers Guidance

Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) blamed disappointing earnings from its finance unit for lowering the high end of its second quarter guidance.  Shares of the manufacturer dropped $3.76 to close at $54.42.
Acadia Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ACAD) schizophrenia treatment ACP-104 failed a midstage clinical trial sending shares of the biopharmaceutical plunging $3.66 to close at $4.83.

Bargain hunters lifted shares of Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS) $3.72 to close at $59.56.  The stock tumbled last week when Goldman Sachs analyst Steven Kent removed the operator of hotels and casinos from his recommended stock list.

Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (Nasdaq: ENER) announced last week that it will offer 4.7 million shares of common stock and $225 million in convertible senior notes to raise capital to expand production.  The stock price leaped $9.87 to close at $76.86.


Chiquita Warns Of Possible Losses

Shares of Chiquita Brands International Inc. (NYSE: CQB) plummeted $6.68 to close at $16.65 after the fresh fruit producer warned that it may report a loss in the third quarter due to higher shipping costs and supply constraints in Central America and Ecuador.


Greenfield Online Inc. (Nasdaq: SRVY) received a $426 million cash offer from private investment firm Quadrangle Group sending the stock price soaring $1.60 to close at $14.88.   The company provides marketing survey services on the Internet.

Cowen & Co. analyst Rob Stone said that shares of Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) are undervalued and reiterated his Outperform rating for the solar electric products maker sending the stock price soaring $3.62 to close at $41.10.

A Goldman Sachs Group analyst said that Wachovia Corp. (NYSE: WB) should cut its dividend so that it can maintain capital.  The stock price dropped $1.12 to close at $18.19.

 

While Maxygen (Nasdaq: MAXY) said that it has four patents related to its Maxy-G34 drug candidate, the biopharmaceutical warned that Amgen (Nasdaq: AMGN) may file suit for infringing on one of its patents.  Shares of Maxygen plunged $1.36 to close at $3.49 while Amgen stock added 75 cents to close at $43.97.

Massey Energy (NYSE: MEE) will move from the S&P SmallCap 600 to the S&P 500, replacing OfficeMax (NYSE: OMX) which will move to the S&P SmallCap 600.  Shares of Massey leaped $5.77 to close at $81.84 while OfficeMax stock eased 2 cents to close at $18.10.


 

Shares of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (NYSE: LEH) soared $3.11 to close at $25.81 after BlackRock expressed confidence in the beleaguered financial services firm.

Fifth Bancorp May Cut Dividend

An analyst warned that Fifth Third Bancorp (Nasdaq: FITB) may cut its dividend by up to 50% and raise capital to shore up its balance sheet.  The stock price tumbled $1.52 to close at $13.17.

KeyCorp To Issue New Stock

KeyCorp (NYSE: KEY) will cut its dividend in half and announced plans to issue new stock in order to raise $1.5 billion after an unfavorable tax ruling.  The stock price plummeted $3.73 to close at $11.98.

Archer Daniel Midlands Downgraded

Analysts downgraded Archer Daniels Midland Co. (Nasdaq: ADM) over concerns that flooding in the midwest has severely hampered corn crops.  The stock price tumbled $3.76 to close at $33.52.
Invitrogen Corp. (Nasdaq: IVGN) will acquire Applied Biosystems Group (NYSE: ABI) for $6.4 billion in cash and stock.  Shares of Invitrogen plunged $4.62 to close at $38.73 while Applied Biosystems stock rose $1.72 to close at $34.16.

National CineMedia Inc. (Nasdaq: NCMI) blamed weak demand for forecasting second quarter revenue that fell short of expectations sending the stock price plummeting $4.46 to close at $14.00.

Shares of MBIA Inc. (NYSE: MBI) rose 46 cents to close at $5.31 after the bond insurer said that it will not direct $900 million to its bond insurance unit.

 

Belgian brewer InBev offered $46 billion in cash to buy Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. (NYSE: BUD) to create the world's largest beer company.  The stock price soared $3.05 to close at $61.40.

Airline Capacity To Be Cut

U. S. Airways Group Inc. (NYSE: LCC) warned that soaring fuel expenses will force airlines to cut capacity by 9% in the fourth quarter and by another 9% in 2009.  Additional fees may also be introduced to increase revenue.  The stock price tumbled 58 cents to close at $3.20.
Centex Corp. (NYSE: CTX) must pay a fine of $1.485 million for polluting storm drains at construction sites in 34 states as well as the District of Columbia.  Shares of the homebuilder plunged $1.95 to close at $13.96.

CMGI Swings To Loss

Shares of CMGI Inc. (Nasdaq: CMGI) plunged $3.71 to close at $11.30 after the supply-chain and inventory-management software provider swung to a loss in the 3rd quarter of 5 cents per share compared with earnings of 19 cents per share in the year ago period and lowered its revenue outlook.

Shares of American Superconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: AMSC) leaped $7.03 to close at $43.11 after the wire manufacturer announced a $450 million contract from China-based Sinovel Wind Corp.

UBS analyst Eric Wasserstrom cut his price target for Washington Mutual Inc. (NYSE: WM) saying that the mortgage lender's losses will total $27 billion into 2011.  The stock price tumbled $1.28 to close at $6.25.

Mosaic's Credit Rating Lifted

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services cited Mosaic Co.'s (NYSE: MOS) improved finances for raising the potash maker's credit rating to investment grade sending the stock price soaring $7.65 to close at $141.01.

BE Aerospace (Nasdaq: BEAV) will pay $1.05 billion in cash and stock to acquire Honeywell International's (NYSE: HON) Consumables Solutions business.  Shares of BE Aerospace surged $2.98 to close at $29.96 while Honeywell stock edged up 78 cent close at $54.79.

Beleaguered investment banker Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (NYSE: LEH) announced a $6 billion preferred stock offering which was at the high end of analysts' estimates.  The stock price plunged $2.81 to close at $29.48.

 

Shares of Hilb Rogal & Hobbs Co. (NYSE: HRH) leaped $12.93 to close at $43.82 on news that UK-based Willis Group Holdings Ltd. (NYSE: WSH) offered $2.1 billion to buy the insurer.  Willis Group stock dropped $2.16 to close at $33.72.

Shares of Washington Mutual Inc. (NYSE: WM) dropped $1.08 to close at $7.53 over concerns that the capital it raised recently may still not be enough to cover loan losses.
Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK) reported two additional successful horizontal wells at its Haynesville Shale discovery, expects to complete another two wells by the end of the month and is seeking to expand its land holdings in the area.  Shares of the oil and natural gas company climbed $1.97 to close at $58.05.

Although fourth quarter earnings slipped for National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: NSM), the results surpassed estimates and the company forecast first quarter revenue ahead of expectations.  The stock price gained $1.08 to close at $23.74.

Focus Media Lowers Guidance

Shares of Focus Media Holding Ltd. (Nasdaq: FMCN) plummeted $5.70 to close at $31.09 after the China-based advertising network lowered its guidance for the year due to advertisers' response to the recent earthquake and hesitation to spend.

 

Tumbleweed Communication Corp. (Nasdaq: TMWD) announced a $138 million deal to be acquired by Sopra Group, a French information technology company.   Shares of the e-mail and messaging security software provider surged 81 cents to close at $2.58.

 

Inspire Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ISPH) posted positive late stage trial results for its drug candidate treating cystic fibrosis sending shares of the biopharmaceutical soaring $1.34 to close at $5.19.

Petrohawk Energy (NYSE: HK) stock continued to climb by soaring $3.55 to close at $34.82 after Lehman Brothers analyst Jeffrey Robertson upgraded the oil and gas producer and lifted his price target for the stock on Monday.
Two Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) executives will meet with Northwest Airlines' (NYSE: NWA) pilot's union to discuss compensation after the two companies merge.  Shares of Delta climbed 74 cents to close at $6.84 while Northwest stock surged $1.05 to close at $8.06.

Nucor Lifts Guidance

Nucor Corp. (NYSE: NUE) lifted its second quarter guidance as margins rose and overseas demand increased sending shares of the steel company soaring $6.40 to close at $80.54.

Vertex Pharmaceutical Upgraded

Cowan & Co. upgraded Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: VRTX) after the company sold its  future royalty rights for $160 million in cash.  The stock price surged $3.78 to close at $32.63.

Tercica To Be Acquired

French company Ipsen SA will acquire biopharmaceutical Tercica Inc. (Nasdaq: TRCA) in an all cash deal for $663 million.  The stock price nearly doubled by leaping $4.39 to close at $8.80.

Moody's Investors Service may downgrade bond insurers Ambac Financial Group Inc. (NYSE: ABK) and MBIA Inc. (NYSE: MBI) as the credit crisis continues.  Shares of Ambac tumbled 51 cents to close at $2.49 while MBIA stock plunged $1.06 to close at $5.63.

Cogent Shares Tumble

Shares of Cogent Communications Group Inc. (Nasdaq: CCOI) fell $2.11 to close at a new 52-week low of $13.85 on no specific news.
Shares of Indevus Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: IDEV) plummeted $2.84 to close at $1.26 after the FDA delayed approval of the company's injectable testosterone drug candidate due to safety concerns.

Shares of Sequenom Inc. (Nasdaq: SQNM) surged $1.67 to close at $9.33 after the drug research firm reported that a prenatal test used to detect Down syndrome produced no false positives.

United Airlines (Nasdaq: UAUA) announced plans to cut capacity and workers in order to cope with record oil prices.  Shares of the airliner rose 61 cents to close at $9.14.

Guess Beats Expectations

Shares of Guess Inc. (NYSE: GES) soared $5.24 to close at $43.11 after the apparel retailer posted strong first quarter results of 51 cents per share compared with 38 cents per share a year earlier and raised its outlook through 2009.

Wachovia Stumbles

Shares of Wachovia Corp. (NYSE: WB) fell $1.48 to close at a 52-week low of $21.92 after announcing the retirement of CEO Ken Thompson yesterday.

Royale Energy Surges

Shares of Royale Energy Inc. (Nasdaq: ROYL) surged $2.79 to close at $11.09 although the company made no announcements.

In response to an injuction issued by a federal court, Tyson (NYSE: TSN) will voluntarily halt the use of the phrase "raised without antibiotics" in its poultry products.  The stock price fell $1.47 to close at $16.98.
Smith International Inc. (NYSE: SII) will purchase W-H Energy Services Inc. (Nasdaq: WHQ) in a cash and stock deal valued at approximately $3.2 billion.  Shares of W-H surged $7.68 to close at $93.22 while Smith International stock lost $1.18 to close at $76.84.


An analyst initiated coverage of Riverbed Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD) with a low rating and a modest revenue outlook sending the stock price down $1.26 to close at $15.84.


 

Shares of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (NYSE: LEH) plunged $3.22 to close at $30.61 following reports of a possible $4 billion raise.

Standard & Poor's downgraded its debt ratings for Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (NYSE: LEH) and Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MER) to negative citing the continuing credit crisis.  Shares of Lehman Brothers plunged $2.98 to close at $33.83 while Merrill Lynch stock dropped $1.30 to close at $42.62.
Harris Corp. (NYSE: HRS) announced that it is neither selling itself nor seeking to merge with another company prompting a downgrade.  The stock price plummeted $10.18 to close at $55.60.

Tesoro Upgraded

Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Sankey upgraded Tesoro (NYSE: TSO) for its valuation sending the stock price up $2.71 to close at $27.56.

Avant Immunotherapeutics Inc.'s (Nasdaq: AVAN) cancer vaccine more than doubled the survival time of brain cancer patients.  Shares of the biopharmaceutical surged $3.97 to close at $17.98.


Wachovia CEO Ousted

The board of Wachovia Corp. (NYSE: WB) voted to replace its chief executive Ken Thompson, the latest casualty in the banking industry.  Meanwhile, Washington Mutual Inc. (NYSE: WM) split the CEO and chairman roles as part of a new corporate governance plan.  Shares of Wachovia fell 40 cents to close at $23.40 while Washington Mutual stock eased 2 cents to close at $9.00.


 

Acorda Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: ACOR) reported successful late-stage results for its multiple sclerorsis drug candidate sending the stock price soaring $6.74 to close at $28.30.
