Higher Close On Upbeat Jobs Data


The markets closed higher with the Dow gaining 54 points 12,638 as the nations employers added more jobs than expected in April. Nasdaq climbed 12 points to 2831.

On the upside

OXiGENE (Nasdaq: OXGN) will release first quarter earnings on Thursday, May 12, 2011.

Fluor (NYSE: FLR) reported higher first quarter earnings that topped analyst estimates.

Janney Capital Markets initiated coverage of Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) with a Buy rating.

On the downside

Sino Clean Energy (Nasdaq: SCEI) chairman Baowen Ren purchased 115,000 shares of company stock to increase his stake to 14.4%. 

WebMD (Nasdaq: WBMD) reversed year ago losses to post a profit for the first quarter but the stock price dropped.

Shares of Georgia Gulf (NYSE: GGC) continued falling after reporting lower first quarter earnings yesterday.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 2 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 3 to 2 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks rose 4 points to 833.
