A Bloomberg article said that Pep Boys - Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE: PBY) is no longer selling itself.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 7 to 3 on the NYSE while decliners were on par with advancers on Nasdaq. A tax cut lifted personal incomes by 1.0% in January but consumer spending edged up a mere 0.2%. The markets traded mixed during the midday with the Dow rising 52 points to 12,182 while Nasdaq lost 9 points to 2772.

Shares of Royal Energy (Nasdaq: ROYL) continued soaring after announcing last Wednesday that it received a permit to begin production at the Goddard # 2 well in Colusa County, California.

On the downside

A Wall Street Journal article questioned soaring expenses at Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM). Concerns that Italy may cap solar installations at 8 gigawatts weighed down shares of LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK), Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE) and Renesola (NYSE: SOL).

Kenneth Cole Productions (NYSE: KCP) narrowed fourth quarter losses and announced the immediate resignation of chief executive Jill Granoff.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 7 to 3 on the NYSE while decliners edged out advancers by 10 to 9 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks eased a fraction to 821.

HSBC Holding (NYSE: HBC) reported sharply higher 2010 earnings that more than doubled but the results fell short of analyst expectations.The Food and Drug Administration issued a refusal to file letter to Santarus (Nasdaq: SNTS) for its RHUCIN Biologics License Application.

FBR Capital analyst Craig Berger expects production at Marvell Technology (Nasdaq: MRVL) to drop 9%.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 7 to 2 on the NYSE and by 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks rose 4 points to 826.

Cloud Peak Energy (NYSE: CLD) reported higher fourth quarter earnings as revenue rose but the average cost per ton sold climbed.Novatel Wireless (Nasdaq: NVTL) disappointed by swinging to a greater than expected loss for the fourth quarter and warned of a wider than expected loss for the first quarter.

CoreLogic (NYSE: CLGX) swung to a loss for the fourth quarter due to lower revenue and an impairment charge.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 4 to 1 on both the NYSE and on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks surged 17 points to 821.

American International Group (NYSE: AIG) reversed year ago losses to post a profit for the fourth quarter due to asset sales. Excluding the sale of assets, the insurer widened losses.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 4 to 1 on the NYSE and by 5 to 2 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks gained 11 points to 815.

SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD) narrowed fourth quarter losses more than expected and lifted its 2011 production guidance. The oil and natural gas company also announced the sale of two New Mexico properties for $200 million. 

Fourth quarter earnings jumped for Interpublic (NYSE: IPG) to top analyst estimates and the company announced a $300 million stock repurchase plan.

OmniVision Technologies (Nasdaq: OVTI) reported sharply higher third quarter earnings that beat analyst expectations by a wide margin and forecast current quarter results well ahead of estimates.

On the downside

MedAssets (Nasdaq: MDAS) blamed higher expenses for swinging to a loss for the fourth quarter. The healthcare technology provider forecast 2011 results below analyst expectations prompting downgrades.Limelight Networks (Nasdaq: LLNW) priced its public offering of 10 million common shares at the discounted price of $7.10 per share.

NutriSystem (Nasdaq: NTRI) reported higher fourth quarter earnings but warned of weak current quarter sales due to increased competition.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 4 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 5 to 2 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks climbed 8 points to 812.

Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM) reported sharply higher fourth quarter earnings but warned of lower gold and copper production in 2011.Office Depot (NYSE: ODP) is being investigated by the Justice Department for prices the office supplies company charged government and nonprofit agencies.

Fourth quarter earnings more than doubled for GrafTech International (NYSE: GTI) to surpass analyst expectations but the company warned of pricing pressure in 2011.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of 10 to 9 on the NYSE and by 3 to 2 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks gained 4 points to 804.

A sharp drop in January new home sales weighed the markets down during the midday with the Dow falling 63 points to 12,042. Nasdaq added 3 points to 2727.

Capstone Turbine (Nasdaq: CPST) received a follow-on order of 24 additional low emission C65 microturbines. 

Brookdale Senior Living (NYSE: BKD) narrowed fourth quarter losses as revenue rose.

Fourth quarter earnings for MasTec (NYSE: MTZ) more than doubled to beat expectations as revenue surged and the company forecast first quarter results ahead of estimates.

Fourth quarter earnings slipped for InterDigital (Nasdaq: IDCC).While fourth quarter earnings rose for AXT (Nasdaq: AXTI), the results fell short of estimates and the company forecast first quarter results below expectations.

Questcor Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: QCOR) disappointed with lower fourth quarter earnings.In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of nearly 9 to 7 on the NYSE while advancers edged out decliners by nearly 10 to 9 on Nasdaq. NetEase.com (Nasdaq: NTES) reported higher fourth quarter earnings as revenue climbed.

Salix Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: SLXP) expects to receive a Complete Response Letter from the Food and Drug Administration for its non-constipation irritable bowel syndrome treatment XIFAXAN.E-trade (Nasdaq: ETFC) announced a secondary offering of 23.95 million common shares priced at $16 per share.

Magna International (NYSE: MGA) reversed year ago losses to post a profit for the fourth quarter but the results fell short of expectations.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 5 to 3 on the NYSE and by more than 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. Satcon Technology (Nasdaq: SATC) narrowed fourth quarter losses but the company offered a disappointing outlook for the current quarter.Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) reported higher first quarter earnings but revenue fell short of expectations and the company forecast current quarter results below estimates.

Clean Energy Fuels (Nasdaq: CLNE) will provide fuel for UPS' new fleet of 48 liquefied natural gas trucks in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Increased enrollments lifted fourth quarter earnings for American Public Education (Nasdaq: APEI) and the for-profit educator expects higher enrollments in the first quarter as well.

On the downside

While Blue Coat Systems (Nasdaq: BCSI) reported higher third quarter earnings, the results fell short of expectations and the company forecast disappointing fourth quarter results.Merge Healthcare (Nasdaq: MRGE) reversed year ago losses to post a profit for the fourth quarter but the stock price fell.

Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB) disappointed with lower second quarter earnings and revenue and cut its full year outlook.Citigroup downgraded JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU).

A Canadian court ruled in favor of Valence Technology (Nasdaq: VLNC) in its patent infringement lawsuit against Phostech Lithium.

Starbucks' (Nasdaq: SBUX) announcement that it was developing bold plans for the single-serve coffee market sent shares of domestic market leader Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (Nasdaq: GMCR) tumbling.Anadigics (Nasdaq: ANAD) reversed year ago losses to post a better than expected profit for the fourth quarter but warned of losses for the first quarter.

Fourth quarter earnings for Itron (Nasdaq: ITRI) surged but the results fell short of expectations and the electric grid technology provider forecast disappointing current quarter and full year results. The company must also restate financials from the first nine months of 2010.Ecolab (NYSE: ECL) reported higher fourth quarter earnings but the results missed expectations and the cleaning services company announced the elimination of 900 jobs.

Fourth quarter earnings surged for Weight Watchers International (NYSE: WTW) to surpass expectations as revenue climbed.

Third quarter earnings climbed for NetApp (Nasdaq: NTAP) to beat expectations but revenue fell short and the company forecast fourth quarter earnings below estimates.Liz Claiborne (NYSE: LIZ) narrowed fourth quarter losses but the apparel company forecast 2012 results below its previous guidance.

Seeking Alpha contributor Michael Bryant affirmed his expectation that Orexigen Therapeutics' (Nasdaq: OREX) obesity treatment Contrave may be approved after additional safety studies are completed.

Shares of KV Pharmaceutical (NYSE: KVA) continued rising after the Food and Drug Administration approved the preterm birth prevention drug Makena on Friday.

On the downside

Bargain hunters snapped up shares of Orexigen Therapeutics (Nasdaq: OREX), whose stock price plummeted earlier this week when the FDA rejected the biopharmaceutical's obesity treatment Contrave.

Aetna (NYSE: AET) reported higher fourth quarter earnings that topped estimates and forecast 2011 results ahead of expectations.

On the downside

Although fourth quarter earnings rose for Coinstar (Nasdaq: CSTR), the results fell short of expectations and the company current quarter earnings below estimates.Complete Production Services (NYSE: CPX) reversed year ago losses to post a fourth quarter profit but the resuls missed expectations

Power-One (Nasdaq: PWER) reported sharply higher fourth quarter earnings as revenue surged but the company forecast first quarter revenue below estimates.Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS) reversed year ago losses to post a profit for the fourth quarter but revenue fell short of expectations

Muddy Water Research initiated coverage of China MediaExpress (Nasdaq: CCME) with a Strong Sell rating saying that the company inflated its revenue and profits.While International Coal (NYSE: ICO) swung to a profit for the fourth quarter, the results missed estimates

Jaguar Mining (NYSE: JAG) will offer $90 million in convertible senior notes.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 10 to 9 on the NYSE while advancers were on par with decliners on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks added 2 points to 798.

Estee Lauder (NYSE: EL) reported higher second quarter earnings that surpassed analyst expectations as revenue rose prompting the cosmetics company to lift its full year guidance.

THQ (Nasdaq: THQI) swung to a third quarter loss and forecast current quarter results that fell far short of expectations.Aegean Marine Petroleum Network (NYSE: ANW) warned of losses for the fourth quarter

January same store sales surged by a much greater than expected 24% for Limited Brands (NYSE: LTD).

Radian Group (NYSE: RDN) blamed a significant charge for widening fourth quarter losses. Intersil (Nasdaq: ISIL) disappointed with lower fourth quarter earnings that missed expectations and forecast first quarter results below estimates prompting a downgrade

Upbeat Earnings Send Markets Soaring

Investors embraced upbeat earnings to send the Dow soaring to close above the 12,000 mark for the first time in more than two years. The blue chip index leaped 148 points to 12,040 while Nasdaq soared 51 points to 2751.

Fourth quarter earnings for Entegris (Nasdaq: ENTG) more than doubled to beat expectations as revenue rose.

Lexmark International (NYSE: LXK) reported sharply higher fourth quarter earnings that surpassed analyst estimates.

Tupperware Brands (NYSE: TUP) blamed charges for lower fourth quarter earnings but the results topped estimates.

On the downside

Fourth quarter earnings rose for Paccar (Nasdaq: PCAR) but the truck maker warned that increasing commodity prices will hurt margins.The Forensic Factor questioned AutoChina International's (Nasdaq: AUTC) accounting practices.
