Investors Embrace Upbeat Economic Data To Lift Markets To Higher Close

Investors embraced increasing home construction and rising industrial output to lift the markets to a sharply higher close with the Dow soaring 103 points to 10,405. Nasdaq jumped 27 points to 2209.

On the upside

Agilent Technologies (NYSE: A) swung to a third quarter profit that surpassed analyst expectations as revenue soared.

Teck Resources (NYSE: TCK) announced that its notes offering has closed.

Cenveo (NYSE: CVO) chairman and chief executive Robert G. Burton Sr. purchased 45,000 shares of company stock.

On the downside

Shares of Chico's FAS (NYSE: CHS) fell ahead of its earnings release tomorrow.

Triple-S Management (NYSE: GTS) was not invited by the Puerto Rican government to participate in the negotiation process to win management responsibilities for the Reform (Medicaid) business.

Newell Rubbermaid (NYSE: NWL) commenced an exchange offer for its convertible senior notes.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 7 to 2 on the NYSE and by 3 to 1 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks climbed 11 points to 626.
