AMR Widens Losses

American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) blamed higher fuel expenses for widening first quarter losses to $1.52 per share from $1.35 per share in the year ago period. Shares of the airliner fell 79 cents to close at $7.77.

AMR Losing Market Share

AirFinancials.com reported that budget airlines are taking market share away from legacy carriers weighed down shares of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) 45 cents to $8.94.

Japan Airlines rejected overtures by Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) to switch alliances to SkyTeam and will continue its partnership with American Airlines (NYSE: AMR) through Oneworld. Shares of Delta climbed $1.05 to $12.30 while American Airlines stock rose 69 cents to $8.01.

 

Shares of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) lost 40 cents to $7.74, Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) dropped 53 cents to $11.24, and United Air Lines parent UAL Corp. (NYSE: UAUA) fell 40 cents to $12.69 over concerns that new security measures introduced at airports after a failed attempt to blow up an airplane will curtail air travel.

 

Shares of UAL Corp. (Nasdaq: UAUA) gained 83 cents to $11.00, AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) rose 53 cents to $7.57 and Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE: CAL) climbed 93 cents to $17.17 as crude oil prices retreated.

 

UAL And AMR Upgraded

Morgan Stanley upgraded United Air Lines parent UAL Corp. (Nasdaq: UAUA) and American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR). Shares of UAL rose 89 cents to $9.15 while AMR stock gained 44 cents to $6.73.

American Airlines Swings To Loss

American Airlines (NYSE: AMR) swung to a loss for the third quarter of $1.26 per share compared with income of 12 cents per share a year earlier as revenue plunged. Shares of the airliner tumbled 98 cents to $6.68.

U.S. Airways And AMR Issue New Notes

U.S. Airways Group (NYSE: LCC) and AMR Corporation (NYSE: AMR) issued new notes in order to raise capital. Shares of U.S. Airways dropped 57 cents to $4.66 while AMR stock fell 36 cents to $8.08.

AMR To Offer Stock

American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) will offer 30 million shares of common stock and $250 million in convertible senior notes. The stock price fell 48 cents to $8.55.

American Airlines (NYSE: AMR) received $2.9 billion in financing including $1 billion in cash from the sale of frequent flyer miles to Citigroup. The stock price climbed $1.20 to $8.55.

 

American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) widened first quarter losses to $375 million from $341 million as people flew less due to the weak economy but the results topped analyst estimates.  Shares of the airliner climbed 80 cents to $5.02.



 

AMR's Debt Rating Downgraded

Fitch Ratings downgraded American Airlines parent AMR Corp.'s (NYSE: AMR) debt rating further into junk status on Friday sending shares of the airliner tumbling 55 cents to close at $3.04.

All the unions of American Airlines (NYSE: AMR) have requested federal mediation from the National Mediation Board sending shares of the airliner tumbling 96 to close at $6.25.

AMR Widens Losses

American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) widened fourth quarter losses to $1.22 from 28 cents per share a year earlier due to greater fuel expenses.  Shares of the airliner plunged $2.73 to $7.73.

Retreating Oil Lifts Airlines

Retreating oil prices lifted shares of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) 74 cents to close at $10.98, Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) 68 cents to close at $10.97 and Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE: CAL) 99 cents to close at $18.76.

Airlines Soar As Oil Retreats

Shares of United Air Lines parent UAL Corp. (Nasdaq: UAUA) leaped $2.95 to close at $10.30, US Airways Group Inc. (NYSE: LCC) surged $1.49 to close at $6.78 and American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) soared $2.02 to close at $10.80 after crude oil prices retreated to a 14-month low of $69.85 per barrel. 

Crude oil prices surged $2.99 to settle at $116 per barrel sending shares of airline stocks AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) plunging $1.33 to close at $10.86, Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE: CAL) plummeting $2.12 to close at $15.76, and Northwest Airlines Corp. (NYSE: NWA) tumbling $1.14 to close at $10.07.

A drop in oil prices lifted the airline sector with shares of United Airlines (Nasdaq: UAUA) soaring $1.50 to close at $8.51 and AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) climbing $1.48 to close at $9.48.

 

Although AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR), the parent company of American Airlines, swung to a loss of $5.77 per share from a profit of $1.08 per share a year earlier for the second quarter due to record fuel expenses, the results were better than analyts expected.  The stock price surged $1.41 to close at $5.82.

Retreating oil prices lifted shares of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) 63 cents to close at $5.49, Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) 96 cents to close at $5.84 and US Airways Group (NYSE: LCC) 23 cents to close at $2.70.
